Senden fires as Woods, Day miss cut

Updated August 13, 2011 15:12:18

John Senden is just one shot off the lead and tied for third after the second round of the US PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, while Tiger Woods was cut from a major tournament for just the fourth time.

Senden, 40, is in a great position to challenge for his first major after he shot his second consecutive 2-under-par 68 to be 4-under 136 for the tournament.

Senden trails Americans Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner after the pair shot 6-under and 5-under rounds respectively to move to 5-under 135.

DA Points, Jim Furyk and Scott Verplank join Senden at 4-under.

Adam Scott was the next best Australian after a 1-under 69 moved him to 2-under 138 and a tie for 11th, while Jason Day joined Woods and German Martin Kaymer on the scrapheap.

Scott was tied for the lead briefly at one point when he reached 5-under for the tournament on the back nine but a bogey on the 14th hole before a double bogey on the last blotted his card.

Scott lost his tee shot well right on the treacherous 18th and despite hitting what he thought was a good pitch out back to the short grass, the ball ran a good 50 metres on the pristine fairways straight into the water.

"I played very good today. I did everything I needed to do. But it was just disappointing to finish that way," Scott said.

"But it is a hard hole. You can't escape that. I hit a loose shot off the tee and got myself in trouble.

"Overall, though, I'm really happy with two 69s, under par, and not far from the lead.

"It's a good spot to be heading into the weekend."

Robert Allenby was the only other Australian to make the cut after he finished at two-over 142 in a tie for 39th.

Aaron Baddeley (+5), Day (+5), Geoff Ogilvy (+6), Steve Elkington (+8), Richard Green (+9) and Brendan Jones (+14) all missed the 4-over cut mark.

Woods missed the weekend for the first time in a US PGA Championship with a 10-over 150.

"It's frustration, disappointment that I'm not contending in the tournament. So, next time," Woods said when asked about his feelings.
