Aussies in striking distance at Sawgrass

Posted May 15, 2011 13:00:00

Aaron Baddeley, Jason Day and Greg Chalmers were four shots off the lead midway through a rain-affected third round at the US PGA Tour Players Championship in Florida.

A huge electrical storm and subsequent rain ensured four-and-a-half hours of golf were lost at TPC Sawgrass with the Australian trio unable to start their rounds until very late in the day.

The Aussie assault sits at 7-under-par for the tournament, four adrift of Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and American Nick Watney.

Steve Stricker and David Toms were a shot back at 10-under-par while KJ Choi and Lucas Glover were on 9-under.

Day managed to nab two birdies in 10 holes to move up the leaderboard, Chalmers had one birdie in nine holes while Baddeley negotiated seven holes and had two birdies and as many bogeys.

When the squall line hit Ponte Vedra Beach, pea-sized hail covered the course and winds reached 64 kilometres per hour, felling a large tree on the 16th fairway.

It forced players indoors for the lengthy lay-off and soaked the usually hard and fast course, allowing players to attack soft greens upon resumption.

The Australians were hoping for fast conditions, similar to courses back home, circumstances that can traditionally give the field a rough time.

"The greens were definitely softer and I would have liked them to stay firm but these things happen," Baddeley said.

"But if you are playing well you can shoot low scores when it is like this so it's fine."

The only other Australians left in the field managed to complete their third rounds with Robert Allenby carding a 4-under 68 to move to a 5-under 211 total and Matt Jones shooting a 3-under 69 to finish at 3-under 213.
