Day still walking on air

US veteran Jim Furyk defends his title this week at The Heritage, where Australian Jason Day returns to PGA Tour action seeking to build on his runner-up finish at the Masters.

Day finished tied for second with fellow Australian Adam Scott in the year's first major, which was won by South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.

Scott immediately returned to action last week at the Texas Open, where he was the defending champion and finished tied for 23rd.

Day, meanwhile, said he had been busy, even though he did not compete last week.

"It's been a roll straight after the Masters," Day said.

"I tried to relax as good as I could.

"I had to do an outing on Thursday, had another outing Saturday and flew here on Sunday," Day added.

"I haven't had actually time to decompress as of yet."

Day said he could only be encouraged by his Masters performance, which included an impressive second-round 64 and a closing 68 that proved not enough when Schwartzel birdied his last four holes.

"Obviously, I was nervous, starting the final day there," Day said.

"But I just knew if I hung around, I would come close. If I didn't birdie the last two holes, I still would have played great, I still would have finished 10-under and would have played great for the week.

"But to finish the way I did, I couldn't have done it any better."

Day's display at his first Masters earned him a spot in one of The Heritage's marquee first-round pairings, alongside Furyk and US Ryder Cup player Matt Kuchar.

South African Ernie Els, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and England's Ian Poulter will play together in the first two rounds in another marquee group.

England's Luke Donald, Australian Aaron Baddeley and American Mark Wilson are in a group in which the three players have combined for four PGA Tour titles already this year.
