Westwood stays near top with Indonesia win

Posted April 24, 2011 19:07:00

Lee Westwood celebrated his 38th birthday with a comfortable three-stroke victory at the Indonesian Masters to stay in the hunt for regaining the world number one spot from German Martin Kaymer.

The world number two will top the rankings if fellow Briton Luke Donald, who led by a stroke at the $750,000 Heritage tournament in South Carolina after the penultimate round, fails to land the trophy.

Westwood, who led by five strokes after the third round, started with a birdie on the first hole but dropped a shot on the second to make the turn at even-par 36 at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Westwood, who was world number one for 17 weeks until Kaymer replaced him in February, birdied the 11th and 12th holes after eight straight pars to take control of the leaderboard to end at 19-under 269.

Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee finished second with a brilliant bogey-free round of 65.

Australia's Marcus Both finished on 13-under for an equal-third finish alongside Park Hyun-bin of South Korea, Thailand's Thitiphun Chuayprakong and Bangladesh's Siddikur Rahman.

Donald moves near top spot

Posted April 24, 2011 10:25:00

Luke Donald, set to become world number one with a victory, fired a 1-under-par 70 to grab a one-shot lead over defending champion Jim Furyk after 54 holes of the Heritage tournament.

The Englishman strung together eight pars and a birdie at the par-four 16th on the back nine to stand on 11-under 202 after three rounds of the US PGA event, one stroke atop Furyk with Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge and American Scott Verplank two adrift.

Donald, currently ranked third, would move past current top man Martin Kaymer of Germany with a victory and also pass fellow Englishman Lee Westwood no matter how Westwood fares this week at the Indonesian Masters.

Donald and Westwood traded "good luck" messages on Twitter before their third rounds.

"I think I have an opportunity to go out there and win and if I do, I know what happens," Donald said.

"It's just friendly banter."

Donald, who won the World Golf Championships Match Play title in February, took a double-bogey 7 on the second hole to stumble from the lead and just two holes later there were 17 players within two strokes of the top spot.

But Donald bounced back with birdies on the par-five fifth for the third day in a row and the par-three seventh for the second day in a row, then answered a bogey at the eighth with a birdie at nine to share the lead with Furyk.

The Englishman collected his last birdie of the day at 16, where he stuck his approach three feet from the pin.

But he said two par saves, at the third and fourth holes, were crucial, helping him rebound from the double-bogey at the second.

"Those up-and-downs and keeping some momentum going where I wasn't going completely backwards was big for me," he said

Australian Jason Day, playing for the first time since he shared second at the Masters, was in the hunt as well but began the back nine with three bogeys in a row to stumble back.

Furyk, twice a Heritage runner-up as well as last year's winner, suffered a 10-foot birdie lip out at 11 and faltered with a bogey at 12 but answered with birdies at 13 and 15.

Furyk found a sand trap on his approach at 18 and took a bogey to leave Donald on top but himself joining him in the final pairing.

"I've had a couple of good battles with guys down the stretch at this torunament and I look forward to another one tomorrow," Furyk said.

Furyk and Donald will be paired in the final group, renewing a rivalry that has seen some memorable tussles.

At last year's US PGA Tour Championship, Furyk saved par from a bunker on the 72nd hole to beat Donald by a stroke - winning the $US10 million FedEx Cup bonus.

A week later Donald beat Furyk 1-up in Ryder Cup singles to contribute to Europe's victory.

The event is searching for a sponsor in order to return next year.

Donald has gone 118 holes without a three-putt green, his last coming during the first round of the Masters.

Donald seizes Heritage lead

Posted April 23, 2011 10:00:00

England's Luke Donald, set to become world number one with a victory, has fired a six-under-par 65 to grab a one-stroke lead after 36 holes of the US PGA Heritage tournament.

Donald, currently ranked third, would move past current top man Martin Kaymer of Germany with a victory and also finish ahead of countryman Lee Westwood no matter how Westwood fares this week at the Indonesian Masters.

Donald opened with back-to-back birdies and also birdied the par-five fifth, par-three seventh and par-four ninth to make the turn in 31.

After taking a bogey to start the back nine, Donald answered with a birdie at 11 and another at the par-5 15th to stretch his lead, finishing on 10-under 132 after two rounds.

American Garrett Willis, who led after firing a first-round 64, birdied the 18th hole to stand alone in second place after the second round on 133.

Colombian Camilo Villegas, Australian Jason Day, defending champion Jim Furyk and his US countryman Chad Campbell shared third on 134 with England's Ian Poulter and American Ben Crane on 135.

Willis seizes Heritage lead

Updated April 22, 2011 12:47:00

Garrett Willis' devotion to his old putter paid off as he reeled of six birdies in a row en route to a 7-under-par 64 and the first-round lead in The Heritage.

The American, who has struggled with his putting this season, had planned to put a new putter in his bag, but at the last minute Thursday he told his caddie to get 'Old Faithful' from the car.

'Old Faithful' and Willis certainly got the job done, with a string of six straight birdies from the second hole at Harbour Town.

He had three more birdies and two bogeys to take the lead in a round that was suspended by darkness after an earlier rain delay.

India's Arjun Atwal, Matt Bettencourt, Chad Campbell and Tim Herron were in the clubhouse on 65, with Mark Wilson, Colombia's Camilo Villegas and 2009 Heritage winner Brian Gay a further shot back on 66.

Luke Donald, ranked number three in the world, led a group on 67. A victory could move the Englishman to the top of the world rankings.

Donald, winner of the World Golf Championships Match Play Championship in February, is the highest ranked player in the field.

After a slow start he birdied three of his final six to keep himself in contention.

"A lot of people are telling me about" number one, Donald said.

"So it's hard to put out of your brain. But that would be awesome."

Even after his torrid round, Willis was keeping his goal more modest.

"Obviously, very excited about putting this well, and having a chance to making the cut for a change," said Willis, whose only prior US PGA Tour title came at Tucson in 2001 - which was his first tour start.

He dropped to 228th on the PGA Tour money list in 2005 and regained his card in 2009 with a 12th-place finish on the developmental Nationwide Tour money list.

This season Willis has made just two cuts in eight starts.

"We can't make them all. I'm fully aware of that," he said. "But for some reason some of these guys do week in and week out."

In hopes of finding that consistency on the greens he launched a search for a new putter, giving himself a choice of 10. He had planned to go with a belly putter that he used in a practice round on Tuesday.

"I can't pull the trigger," he said of changing his mind about the switch.

His decision was not looking great when he missed a 12-foot birdie attempt at the first hole, but he drained an eight-footer at the second.

"I said, 'Wow, maybe I can make a putt,'" said Willis, who needed just one putt at each of the next five holes.

Solid play into the greens meant all of his birdie putts were from within 15 feet.

After bogeys at nine and 11, he nabbed back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16.

"I made putts today that I normally don't make," he said.

Defending champion Jim Furyk and reigning US Open champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland were in a group on 68.

South African Ernie Els got off to a tough start with a 75 that included a two-shot penalty on the eighth, his penultimate hole, when he was deemed to have tested the playing surface by raking his footprints in a bunker before he made his shot out.

Day still walking on air

Posted April 21, 2011 10:33:00

US veteran Jim Furyk defends his title this week at The Heritage, where Australian Jason Day returns to PGA Tour action seeking to build on his runner-up finish at the Masters.

Day finished tied for second with fellow Australian Adam Scott in the year's first major, which was won by South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.

Scott immediately returned to action last week at the Texas Open, where he was the defending champion and finished tied for 23rd.

Day, meanwhile, said he had been busy, even though he did not compete last week.

"It's been a roll straight after the Masters," Day said.

"I tried to relax as good as I could.

"I had to do an outing on Thursday, had another outing Saturday and flew here on Sunday," Day added.

"I haven't had actually time to decompress as of yet."

Day said he could only be encouraged by his Masters performance, which included an impressive second-round 64 and a closing 68 that proved not enough when Schwartzel birdied his last four holes.

"Obviously, I was nervous, starting the final day there," Day said.

"But I just knew if I hung around, I would come close. If I didn't birdie the last two holes, I still would have played great, I still would have finished 10-under and would have played great for the week.

"But to finish the way I did, I couldn't have done it any better."

Day's display at his first Masters earned him a spot in one of The Heritage's marquee first-round pairings, alongside Furyk and US Ryder Cup player Matt Kuchar.

South African Ernie Els, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and England's Ian Poulter will play together in the first two rounds in another marquee group.

England's Luke Donald, Australian Aaron Baddeley and American Mark Wilson are in a group in which the three players have combined for four PGA Tour titles already this year.

Steele shows mettle to snare Texas Open

Updated April 18, 2011 08:49:00

American Brendan Steele held his nerve with an error-free back nine for a one-shot victory over compatriots Kevin Chappell and Charley Hoffman and his maiden PGA Tour title at the Texas Open.

Steele, a 28-year-old rookie who had not played a single round on the PGA Tour until this season, began the day with a one-shot lead and made it hold up during another wind-whipped afternoon at the TPC San Antonio carding a final round 1-under-par 71.

Defending champion Adam Scott, along with fellow Australians Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden and Nathan Green were all tied for 23rd place at even par.

After a birdie at the second followed by his only bogey of the round at the fifth and another birdie at seven, Steele reeled off 11 consecutive pars to finish with a winning total of 8-under 280.

Chappell had mounted an early charge dropping his third birdie of the day at the 10th to join Steele atop the leaderboard setting the stage for a back nine shootout.

But the two PGA Tour rookies, playing together in the last threesome, would match each other par-for-par until Chappell blinked with a bogey at the 17th and settled for a 2-under 70 to finish joint second with Hoffman who closed with a 68.

Brandt Snedeker battled his way to a 71 to sit alone in fourth two back of the leader on 6-under 282, while Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson (69) and Americans Pat Perez (71) and Cameron Tringale (73) finished one shot further adrift at 283.

Aussies finish fifth in Euro Nations Cup

Updated April 18, 2011 06:46:00

First-round leaders Australia fired a final-round six-under 66 to finish fifth behind defending champions Sweden in the European Nations Cup in Spain on Sunday.

Australian pair Karen Lunn and Katherine Hull, who had set the pace with a 65 on day one, charged up the leaderboard to finish on 16-under par overall, five strokes behind Anna Nordqvist and Sophie Gustafson.

The first nation to retain the trophy in the four versions of the event, the Swedes began the final round with a three-stroke lead and carded a four-under 68 for a 21-under total at La Sella Golf.

Germany and England finished tied for second on 18-under.

"It was absolutely fantastic. I couldn't be happier," Nordqvist told reporters.

"We had a fun team this week and it was exciting to pull out some great golf out there, so we're really happy."

Nordqvist rolled in the winning birdie putt after Gustafson chipped to three feet on the 18th green in front of a bank of waving Swedish flags.

"It means a lot having so many Swedes around here cheering us on," Nordqvist said.

"They made a big effort to come here and there were a lot of people by the 18th green, so it was very exciting."

English pair Laura Davies and Melissa Reid momentarily tied for the lead on the front nine, but couldn't keep their charge going down the stretch.

"We just didn't hole anything really all week," Reid said.

"But it's such a fun week."

Wales finished one shot back in fourth on 17-under after a final round of 68 by Becky Brewerton and Lydia Hall.

In total, 18 teams contested the tournament on the Jose-Maria Olazabal designed course in Denia, Alicante.

Scott in contention at Texas Open

Posted April 17, 2011 10:04:00

Australia's Adam Scott has shot himself back into contention at the US PGA Tour's Texas Open in San Antonio.

The defending champion eagled the par-five 14th and birdied the final two holes to hit a 2-under-par 70 round and sits three shots back from American leader Brendan Steele in a tie for fifth spot.

But Geoff Ogilvy has dropped off the pace, with five bogeys putting him at 2-over for round three and six shots off the lead.

Steele broke from a pack of seven golfers with a 4-under-par 68 to grab a one-shot third round lead.

Steele, who shared the overnight lead with six others, found himself alone atop the leaderboard when he rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt at the 18th and fellow PGA Tour rookie Cameron Tringale bogeyed the last for a 68 to fall one off the pace.

One-over going into the turn at the TPC San Antonio, Steele caught fire with an error-free back nine dropping five birdies for a three day total of 7-under 209.

Americans packed the top of the leaderboard.

Kevin Chappell (70) and Brandt Snedeker (70), who were among the group with a share of the overnight lead, sit two shots back at 5-under.

Pat Perez returned the round of the day, a 5-under 67, to move into contention three off the pace alongside Charles Howell III (68) and Scott.

Ogilvy and American Kevin Sutherland, two others who began the day with a share of top spot, slipped down the leaderboard carding 74s to sit six back on 1-under 215.

Ogilvy in seven-way tie for Texas lead

Posted April 16, 2011 12:12:00

Australian Geoff Ogilvy withstood strong winds to card a level-par 72 and climb into a seven-way tie for the lead after the second round of the Texas Open in San Antonio.

On a difficult day for scoring, Ogilvy posted a three-under total to finish level with Americans Rich Beem (70), Kevin Sutherland (70), Brandt Snedeker (72), Charley Hoffman (73), Brendan Steele (72) and Kevin Chappell (73).

Last year's winner Australian Adam Scott, who tied for second at the Masters on Sunday, returned a 74 to share eighth place at 2-under with Americans Cameron Tringale (71), Matt Every (69) and Dean Wilson (72).

With 48kph gusts sweeping across the course, 2006 US Open champion Ogilvy was happy with his scoring.

"It's a pretty good score," he told reporters after carding five birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-four 12th.

"I feel like I could have had maybe one or two (shots) better but I definitely could have had quite a lot worse.

"As soon as you miss one, there's a potential disaster on every hole. I'm happy to get out of it with no damage done and still looking forward to the weekend."

Scott, who mixed two birdies with four bogeys, felt the challenge of the gusting winds became even more daunting because of the tricky pin positions for the second round.

"The pin spots were very hard to get near, so easy mistakes to be made," he said.

"This course is very difficult around the greens anyway and when that bit of control that you do have is taken away, it's magnified by the severity of these greens."

Americans Stewart Cink and JJ Henry, who set the first-round pace with opening 67s, both slid backwards with matching 78s.

"I don't know if this course is ready for a big old north wind like that," said Cink after recording two birdies, five bogeys and a triple at the par-four ninth.

"There's not a lot of room to play out there.

"If you're driving the ball straight, you can play good. You get a little bit off with the wind - and I was in the rocks and trees probably six, seven times today. It adds up in a hurry."

Only 13 players broke par in Friday's second round compared to 50 in the relatively calm conditions of Thursday.

The scoring average for the day was 75.289, the highest on the PGA Tour since the first round of the 2008 British Open at Royal Birkdale (75.877).

Seventy-eight players made the cut at four-over 148 with double major winner Angel Cabrera of Argentina, 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir of Canada and American Anthony Kim among those failing to advance.

Scott battling to back up in Texas

Posted April 14, 2011 11:36:00

Adam Scott has battled his emotions to be ready for this week's Texas Open title defence after his near-miss at the Masters.

Scott wants to capitalise on the form and confidence he gained while contending at Augusta National as he pursues an eighth US PGA Tour title in San Antonio.

But the Australian admits he has also struggled to overcome a mental letdown with just a four-day turnaround after going so close to winning his first major championship title on Sunday.

Scott has seen his world ranking leap from number 30 to number 17 after his Masters heroics, where he led late on a thrilling final day before being run down by South African Charl Schwartzel's four birdies on the last four holes.

His switch to a broomstick putter has seemingly provided an answer to the inconsistency with the blade that has dogged him in recent seasons and he aims to maintain his momentum.

"I'm looking forward to getting out there and getting those good feelings happening again from last year and also carrying on the good feelings I had going on on the golf course last week," said Scott, who has won four of his US tour titles in Texas.

"I've been resting for a couple of days. It's been a big last few weeks, certainly through the Masters, so I've been trying to rest up and keep the energy levels as high as I possibly can for this week.

"It's certainly a big let-down mentally or emotionally after any major, whether you're in the mix or not. It certainly does take a lot out of you, not just in the tournament but in the practice weeks."

Scott should have plenty of good memories of Augusta National to share this week.

He is paired for the first two rounds with fellow Australian Geoff Ogilvy and Argentina's Angel Cabrera - both of whom also contended strongly at the Masters.

His weekend form at the Masters was impeccable as he posted two 5-under-par 67s in the last two rounds to finish tied second with countryman Jason Day, two shots behind Schwartzel.

That is not that dissimilar to his winning effort in the Texas Open last year where he shot 11-under in the last two days on the Greg Norman-designed AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio and made up a four-stroke deficit.

That week he had been working on a new putting stroke with former tour veteran Dave Stockton that really came together.

This week he will be happy to stick with his broomstick.
